Hockey certainly runs in the Sloan family; not only does Ian’s brother play, his dad Martin is a former Ireland captain and his mum Adele also represented the country too.
Alongside David Ames, Ian took the decision to declare for England and Great Britain in the lead up to Rio 2016 and hasn’t looked back since. Having featured at that Olympics aged 22, he has since become a regular player for both nations and played at his second Games in Tokyo during the summer of 2021. In the summer of 2022 he helped England win a Commonwealth Games bronze medal in front of a home crowd in Birmingham.
A true all-round player, Ian plays key roles in both defence and attack and – alongside Phil Roper and George Pinner – was co-captain of both international teams between 2017-2018.
When he isn’t playing, Ian can be found coaching and is known by many of his team-mates as somewhat of a ‘hockey badger’!
