Former England Captain Anita White Nominated For 2021 Sunday Times Sportswomen Of The Year Award

Former England women’s international captain Anita White has been shortlisted for the Sunday Times Changemaker of the Year Award – and voting is open now.

Anita has made a fantastic contribution to women’s sport both on and off the pitch. As an player, she captained England’s women to victory in the IFWHA World Cup in 1975. In the photograph above, Anita is immediately behind the trophy with her fellow teammates.

She played for England from 1971-76, winning 42 caps including playing a number of games at Wembley Stadium. She also earned further international recognition with Great Britain’s women’s team. 

At club level she started out with Slough, later playing for Ascot and Guildford as well as representing Buckinghamshire.

As an ambassador for female sport, she is the founder of the Anita White Foundation, an organisation that aims to educate, empower, and invest in female leaders in sport, and to champion gender equality in sport leadership. 

She is also a former President of Great Britain Hockey, as well as chair of the Women’s Sport Foundation, helping pioneer the landmark Brighton Declaration on Women and Sport in 1994 - a road map to support the ongoing development of a more fair and equitable system of sport and physical activity, fully inclusive of women and girls. Today, nearly 600 global organisations are signatories to this treaty. 

Having also taken on a number of other significant roles, in 2005 she was awarded an OBE for services to women and sport.
