Lead Coaches required to take responsibility for Designated Senior Teams

To build on its current successes and to continue to offer quality coaching and playing opportunities at both senior and junior level, Yeovil and Sherborne Hockey Club is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced hockey coaches to join our coaching team.

The appointments are due to commence in time for the start of the 2025/26 season.

Yeovil and Sherborne Hockey Club is a friendly, community club with players of all ages and standards up to national level. We attract players from a wide area and offer quality coaching and playing opportunities. The club has 3 Men’s Teams in the Men’s West Hockey league. There are currently 4 Ladies Teams – 3 are in the West Clubs Women’s Hockey League and 1 is a Development Team playing friendly matches on Sundays but there will be 4 Ladies teams in the West Clubs Women’s Hockey League and 1 Ladies Development Team next year as the Club continues to grow. We also have a thriving mixed Masters group meeting up weekly to play hockey and socialise together. There are over 150 children in the Junior section of the club with U14’s, U12’s and U10’s Boys and Girls teams playing in regular local inter-club matches and County/Regional tournaments. 

We currently have a dedicated, enthusiastic team of 7 Lead Coaches who take responsibility for different age groups/teams within the club (with support from volunteer assistant coaches). We require new Lead Coaches to take responsibility for our Ladies and Men’s 1ST teams which will provide a great opportunity for the successful applicant(s) to provide high quality coaching support for teams seeking promotion next year. Our Ladies squad training sessions take place on Tuesday evenings and our Men’s training sessions take place on Wednesday evenings from August to March at the Yeovil Recreation Centre Artificial Hockey Pitch at Mudford Recreation Ground in the centre of Yeovil.Matches and tournaments take place on Saturdays and Sundays.

We have a successful partnership with Yeovil Town Council who maintains the pitch and provides post-match refreshments in a community room on site. 

Key Responsibilities for the Role of Lead Coach 

• To take responsible for a designated team/group of players and ensure appropriate a training programme are in place and risk assessments completed, offering support and guidance as required to ensure high quality performance and participation at all levels.

• To deliver weekly, engaging high quality training sessionsto the designated squad as part of the coaching programme for the season.

• To contribute to the team selection of players as per the Club’s selection policy.

• To monitor performance and provide regular feedback toindividual players and Team/Club Captains.

• To work with the other coaches and captains to recognise, encourage and develop talent both within the squads and the Club as a whole.

Person Specification

Qualification Requirements

• A minimum England Hockey Level 2, or UKCC England Hockey Coach.

• Current Child Protection Certificate SCUK Safeguarding young people taken within last 3 years.

Experience and Knowledge

• Minimum of 3 years relevant coaching experience.

Skills and abilities

• Ability to work with adults in a positive and constructive way

• Lead by example and work as part of a team

• Be flexible and adaptable

• Influence and inspire players through good communication and inter-personal skills.

• Plan, deliver and evaluate coaching sessions to ensure they are high quality and meet individual and team requirements.

• Share the values and ethos of the Club and demonstrate commitment to its continued development.

All Club coaches are subject to DBS/criminal record checking and will be required to complete safeguarding training in line with the Club’s ClubMark status.

This is a part-time role taking place evenings and weekends

The service is to be provided on a self-employed, contract basis.

Applicants must have the right to live and work in the UK. The club is not able to offer relocation costs nor access to, or any guarantee of, full time employment.

Remuneration for the hours worked, including expenseswhere applicable, is available in-line with qualifications, experience, position and responsibilities.
