Do I have to be insured by the EHO to umpire?
Over 85% of adult matches in England are currently umpired by “club appointed umpires”. If someone is a member of their club and undertakes umpiring duties, then they are generally covered by their club’s insurance for their umpiring duties. This is dependent on the insurance policy taken by the club, however if a club takes out the insurance provided by Marsh Sport (BlueFin sport) (insurance partner of England Hockey) then these umpires are covered for their umpiring duties by their club.
An umpire is only “not covered” in one of the following cases:
They are umpiring for a club where they are not a member
They are undertaking appointments at Area level and NOT a paid member of the EHO
A club’s insurance doesn’t include umpiring
For the majority of cases, an umpire would not fall into these categories. An umpire who wants an enhanced insurance policy (for example to include personal accident cover) can access this by becoming either a Silver or Gold EHO member (and paying the relevant cost for the membership.
