Getting Started

The EHB offers two options for those who want to have a go at umpiring.

Option 1
For the real beginner who has limited or no experience we recommend the Foundation Umpire Award. This Award lends itself to In2Hockey and provides a basic guide to the Rules and umpiring skills. It’s very popular with young people and those who want to umpire friendly games or festivals within their school, club or local community.

Option 2
Option 2 is the Level 1 Umpire Award. This is for those who want to whistle competitive hockey in a local environment – for their club or for the local Hockey Umpiring Association.  The Level 1 is based exclusively on 11 a-side hockey and is measured as a bit of a passport; once qualified a Level 1 Umpire can umpire in the early rounds of every EHB competition and at competitive games in county leagues.

Both Awards are available nationwide and are delivered regularly in schools, clubs, colleges and universities.

Young Umpire

If you would like to have a go at umpiring and want to join a course locally, ask at your club or look on our Find a Course section. Alternatively contact the local Hockey Umpiring Association – they regularly deliver courses in most areas. Maybe a group of you from the club would like to give it a go.
